Ten days before Carpenter Technology (CRS) reported earnings, six of seven analysts had EPS estimates below the consensus mean of $3.12. However, one 5-star analyst stood out with a significantly higher estimate of $3.75.
This divergence pushed the StarMine SmartEstimate to $3.20, generating a +2.5% Predicted Surprise, above the 2% threshold considered statistically significant. Carpenter subsequently reported EPS of $3.25, beating consensus expectations of $3.14.
What makes the SmartEstimate different? Unlike the arithmetic consensus, it weights analysts based on their historical accuracy and estimate timeliness. For example, a 2-star analyst received a higher weight than a 3-star peer because their estimate was more recent (October 8 vs. July 31).
The SmartEstimate’s value lies in providing a systematic, repeatable signal for identifying potential earnings surprises, rather than predicting the share-price reaction to any single earnings release.
