After a record-breaking year for worldwide deal making in 2015, 2016 saw merger announcements fall amidst increased stock market volatility, a sharp decrease in the number of mega deals and an all-time year-to-date record for the dollar volume of failed bids. In the first half of 2016 worldwide M&A activity totaled US$1.6 trillion, a 19% decrease from comparable 2015 levels and the slowest opening six month period for worldwide deal making in two years.
