At the recent Thomson Reuters Lipper European Alpha Expert Forum, we asked a panel of experts about the drivers of growth and innovation in the passive industry.

Gregg Guerin, Senior Product Specialist at First Trust Global Portfolios, Hector McNeil, Co-CEO at HANetf and Jason Xavier, Head of EMEA Capital Markets at Franklin Templeton, examine the rules based approaches which are providing competition to traditional active funds.

About Hector McNeil

HANetf is Europe’s first independent “White Label” provider of ETFs in Europe with a turnkey solution for asset managers to enter the ETF business.

Hector is a leading specialist in Exchange Traded Products (ETPs) with over 15 years experience in the sector. Hector started his career at the London Stock Exchange, completed a short stint at BZW and then moved to Morgan Stanley in the late 90s as Head of New Issue Infrastructure. He went on to work for Jiway Holdings (40% owned by Morgan Stanley) as the COO, Nomura International as Director of Fixed Income and Derivatives Operations, and Susquehanna International Group as Head of Business Development where he spent 3 years building up Susquehanna’s ETP market making capabilities. After leaving Susquehanna, Hector worked at ETF Securities as a joint Management Partner where he headed up Sales and Marketing. He was a key ingredient in the company’s growth from 4 members of staff and $50m AUM, to 70 employees globally and $22bn AUM. With his business partner, Nik Bienkowski, Hector launched Boost ETP, a specialist short and leverage ETP issuer, in December 2012. WisdomTree Investments acquired a majority stake in Boost ETP in April 2014.

Hector holds a BA in Economics and Social History from the University of Hull, an MBA from Warwick Business School and is a Fellow of the Securities Institute.

About Jason Xavier

Jason Xavier is the Head of EMEA Capital Markets at Franklin Templeton, he has over 15 years of experience in ETF, index and portfolio strategies. Prior to joining Franklin Templeton in the summer of 2017, Mr. Xavier headed the Capital Markets team at ETF Securities based in London. His experience prior to ETF Securities includes running the ETF capital markets function at HSBC Asset Management and multi-asset index structuring at Deutsche Bank, Lehman Brothers and Goldman Sachs. He holds a BEng in Electrical Engineering and a MSc in Applied Mathematics from Imperial College London.
