Friday Facts: U.S. ETF Industry Review, March 2025

March 2025 was another month with strong inflows for the U.S. ETF industry. These inflows occurred in a volatile and negative market environment in which investors around the globe acted nervous over any political and economic news. Investor sentiment was impacted by the discussions around tariffs by the U.S. president and potential tit-for-tat reactions from the markets which are the targets of the new tariffs. That said, the tariffs are seen as a kind of trade war between the U.S. and the rest of the world, especially China, by some market observers. When it comes to this, investors were concerned

Bond Market Turbulence Triggered Huge Concerns

Bond Market’s Turbulence On April 2, Trump unexpectedly announced indiscriminate high “reciprocal tariffs,” triggering an unprecedented storm in the global financial markets. The global stock and bond markets suffered an epic bloodbath, with no one spared. U.S. stocks experienced their largest single-day drop since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average losing over $6 trillion in market value. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq indices fell more than 20% from their peak in December last year, entering a technical bear market. Asian stock markets, including Taiwan and Hong Kong, saw single-day declines exceeding 10%.

Breakingviews: Argentina’s latest bailout gets a trade war boost

Don’t cry for Argentina just yet. La Albiceleste’s new $20 billion loan package from the International Monetary Fund might seem the dreary continuation of decades of interventions that failed to put the South American nation on stable economic footing. But by dismantling tight controls on the official value of its currency, President Javier Milei is opening the door to international trade just as crushing U.S. tariffs scramble global relationships. The larger-than-expected IMF package will backstop Argentina’s efforts to remove a peg on the peso in place since 2019. It was always a shaky effort: on Friday, the currency’s official price closed at 1,074 per U.S. dollar,

High Yield: So Far, So Good?

Using the Lipper Leaders scoring system to analyse the best-performing funds in the IA Global High Yield Bond sector.   Global High Yield Bond Funds invest in a diversified portfolio of bonds issued by corporations and occasionally governments worldwide, rated below investment grade (BB/Ba or lower), offering higher interest rates due to their increased credit risk. This time last year, I was somewhat sceptical as to the prospects for high yield. My rationale was that an increasing number of companies would be returning to high-yield markets to refinance over the coming years. Refinancing needs trend steeply upwards until 2029. That
