European Fund Flow Trends, March 2023

It was not surprising that March 2023 was in general a positive month for the European fund industry given the rather positive revisions of the economic outlooks for the major economies globally and a possible end of the interest hiking cycle of central banks in the near future. That said, mutual fund promoters (-€2.0 bn) faced outflows, while ETF promoters (+€13.0 bn) enjoyed inflows. The outflows from actively managed funds were driven by outflows from mixed-assets products (-€13.7 bn). Within the current market environment, it is somewhat surprising that European investors sold mixed-assets products since these products were European investors

Commodity funds (+€2.2 bn) were the only asset type with net inflows for March. Conversely, bond funds (-€134.9 bn) faced the highest outflows overall, bettered by equity funds (-€48.9 bn), mixed-assets funds (-€38.7 bn), alternative UCITS funds (-€27.7 bn), real estate funds (-€1.5

Fund Manager Briefing: Artemis US Select Fund–Cormac Weldon

Artemis US Select Fund is a dynamic, multi-layered US equities proposition which is presided over by the highly experienced Cormac Weldon. His move to Artemis in 2014 was a coup for the firm and seems to be a good fit for the fund manager and his team, who have bedded down well in the Artemis environment. People Weldon is, rightly, a respected US equities fund manager. His background in accounting—for me, one of the best backgrounds for a fund manager—gives him the skills to navigate financial statements, which are vital for good stock picking. Monday Morning Memo: European Fund Industry Review H1 2019

The European fund industry enjoyed estimated net inflows of €41.3 bn in H1 2019. These inflows follow the first year with estimated net outflows since 2011. These inflows occurred in a volatile but positive market environment driven by discussions of a possible trade war between the U.S. and China, a possible return of the Euro crisis caused by developments in Italy and France, and a general economic slowdown with decreasing earnings at the company level. Nevertheless, since the equity markets showed a rebound over the course of H1 2019, one would expect to see net inflows into mutual funds. That

Views From a Conference: Artemis – Part II

Highlights from the annual Artemis investment conference held on February 6, 2014, by Jake Moeller. This article concludes the highlights with a review of the remaining two funds that were showcased at “An Evening With Artemis.” Artemis Strategic Bond Fund James Foster and Alex Ralph have formed a very credible partnership at Artemis. James ostensibly concentrates on the investment-grade component and Alex on the high-yield, but they both work on duration and are clearly comfortable offering each other counsel and ideas. Although a highly flexible fund, the Strategic Bond Fund historically has had substantial exposure to the financial sector and
