Singapore was lauded for its initial handling of the coronavirus outbreak. It was one of the first countries outside China to report a sharp increase in cases, but a swift government response, which included contact tracing, quarantine measures and travel restrictions seemed to have halted the spread of the disease. However, the number of confirmed cases has started rising sharply again, highlighting the risks of a premature easing of lockdown restrictions at a time when several European countries are plotting a path out of lockdown. The city state recorded 799 new cases on Monday, bringing the total number of confirmed cases to 14,423.
